| Older properties
are the ones that NEED fire sprinklers. They generally have old electric
cables, old dry floorboards and years of old wallpaper and paint. All of
which make older properties a high fire risk.
Domestic sprinklers can be easily fitted into older
properties. Although it does take a little longer, the extra cost is well
worth the piece of mind. Many informed local authority building control
officers and planning departments are accepting fire sprinklers as an
engineered solution for life protection.
Retrofits can cause some minor disruption to
family life. Spencer-Fire, fitters always try to leave a home safe and useable
for the occupants. If it is possible, try and have sprinklers fitted
whilst you are away on holiday.
Retrofitting consists of:
 |
Site survey to establish
the layout of joists, pipe etc. and the suitability of your water
supply. |
 |
Measuring each area to be
protected |
 |
Calculating the flow rate
required to each sprinkler and what size of pipe will achieve the
desired flow rate |
 |
Removing all furniture and
carpets from the area above the room of installation |
 |
Drilling a large hole in
the ceiling for the sprinkler to fitted into |
 |
Connecting all
pipework |
 |
Testing system thoroughly |
 |
Replacing any items that
have been moved |
 |
Certifying the system |
Spencer-Fire give the customer TWO copies of plans,
calculations etc. One is a bound copy for the householder, the other is
loose for inspection by your local authority.

absolute minimum, and the fitters will even vacuum the carpets of the
rooms that have sprinklers installed.

pipes are double checked for leaks and a check is made on flow rates.
Spencer-Fire, fire domestic fire sprinklers
are designed to give you the maximum chance of survival in the event of a
fire. Older properties are most at risk from fire.
If you are planning to extend or
convert your loft, ask your local planning office whether doemstic fire
sprinklers would ease other requirements, BUT please note, fire sprinklers
should be fitted throughout a property and not just in the loft conversion
or extension.
